“Buying or selling links that pass PageRank is in violation of Google’s webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact a site’s ranking in search results.” This is an excerpt taken from Google and their official blog and thus you can see that they adamantly prohibit buying and/or selling of any links that impact’s a site’s rankings/listings.
Why do I bring this up you might ask? The reason is simple. Late last week I happen to come across a HUGE brand (a brand that EVERY US household is aware of) that was selling links directly on their homepage. And to top it off the links that were bought were not even remotely close to being what the brand’s website is about. Thus, they stood out like a sore thumb making it easy to tell they were paid links. Tsk Tsk!
At Creative Daylight, we try our best to gain links for our clients as organic as possible so as to not “anger” Google. However, if you are GOING to buy/sell links at least try to do it with sites that are somewhat similar to what you do. For example, if you have a shoe website try getting buying/selling links with sites about handbags, jewelry sites or women’s accessories. Don’t be like this brand and sell links for cheap electricity for foreign residents on your homepage when you sell kitchen supplies (topics changed to not out the “brand”) in the US.
Now I don’t believe in outing someone due to bad karma and all unless it’s really warranted, but if you ever need to report spam to Google here is the link to do it: http://www.google.com/contact/spamreport.html.
